Why the number series no longer tells you the operator
Before mobile number portability, the first four digits of an Indian mobile number reliably identified the operator. A number starting 9876 belonged to whoever held that series, permanently.
Portability ended that. Since MNP went nationwide in 2011, a subscriber can keep their number and move to any operator, and since 2015 they can carry it across telecom circles too. The series a number was issued from and the network it currently lives on are now two different facts.
That matters more than it sounds. If you are routing SMS traffic, costing a campaign, or configuring least-cost routing on a PBX, using the series to guess the operator will be wrong for a large and growing share of numbers.
What this tool tells you
- Current operator — who actually serves the number today, not who issued it.
- Telecom circle — the licensed service area the number is registered in.
- Ported status — whether the number has moved from its original series holder.
- Series — the original allocation block, for reference.
The lookup runs against live portability data. It is not a guess based on the number prefix.
What it does not tell you
It does not tell you the subscriber’s name, address or location. That information is not available through any lawful public lookup, and any service claiming to provide it is either fabricating results or handling data it should not have.
It also does not tell you whether the number is currently active, or whether it is reachable. A number can be ported, valid and still switched off.
Checking numbers in bulk
For a list rather than a single number, use the bulk MNP checker. It accepts up to 5,000 numbers pasted or from a CSV, processes them in batches so nothing times out, and exports the results back as CSV.
That is the version most people want for cleaning a contact database or reconciling a billing export.

Spaces, dashes, the +91 country code and a leading zero are all stripped before lookup. Indian mobile numbers are ten digits and begin with 6, 7, 8 or 9 — anything else is rejected before a lookup is attempted.
Privacy
Numbers you check are not stored against your session, and we do not build a history of what you have looked up. Lookups are cached briefly by the number itself so that repeated checks do not re-query the upstream service, which keeps the tool fast and free to run.
If you are processing customer numbers under a data protection obligation, note that the lookup does leave your browser — unlike our IMEI Checker, which is entirely client-side. Bulk results stay in your browser until you choose to export them.
